Technological Innovation

Incorporating technology in the classroom is very important as it provides students with the opportunities to engage in more interactive, collaborative and personalized learning experiences. The alternative representation and visualization of the information allows students to explore different perspectives and develop critical learning skills. It is also very important to acknowledge the challenges that children born in low-income countries may face as their access to quality education and technology based resources can be very limited. Nevertheless, there are still many effective teaching strategies and methods that can be utilized to advocate for quality education.

Personally, I had no access to technology in any of my K-8 classrooms and unfortunately I also lacked other educational resources for innovative learning experiences. The classroom maintained one chalkboard that was used for visual demonstrations and the lessons were mostly delivered auditory with one text to each subject.

For my third year placement practicum, students have very limited access to technology as the school vision is to engage students in activities that promotes creativity and personal growth. The classroom has one smart board that is only used for daily tasks as most of the lessons are exampled on the writing stand. However, teachers do have access to rent iPads when needed for the lesson.

There exists many educational apps and tools to help cover a wide range of subjects, making learning more accessible and enjoyable. What are some educational technology apps and tools that have been successful in K-9 classrooms? This question is important to me because I have relied on technology apps to reinforce learning and understand concepts better and I wish to provide that for my students as an easy way to access learning that is effective.

  1. Wow! I love how you went in-depth about your personal experience. It gives foundation to understand your perspective based on your experiences. I also like how you noted the similarities between your experiences and your current placement! I do think that if you were to expand on this and mention if the limited access is for the same reasons or different? Thank you for sharing, Rohma!
